On 13th March, a group of Campion Sixth Form students were invited to participate in the Midlands Regional Debate Competition for the European Youth Parliament (EYP). This prestigious event brought together schools from across the region to debate key political and social issues.
Representing Campion were Year 12 politics students: Ruya, Harleen, Bani, Manny, Olivia, Caitlin and Noah.
The team was assigned to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, where they were tasked with developing and presenting a resolution for debate. Demonstrating excellent teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills, the students delivered a compelling proposal. Their efforts were recognised by the audience, with the congregation voting overwhelmingly in favour of their resolution—by the largest margin of all the debates on the day.
Although Campion narrowly missed out on a place in the top three, which would have secured progression to the national finals in Newcastle upon Tyne later this year, the students’ performance was an outstanding achievement. The eventual national winners will go on to represent the UK at European level.
Importantly, the experience does not end here. Participants now have the opportunity to remain involved with EYP UK as volunteers, potentially including opportunities to volunteer abroad—an invaluable experience for personal and professional development.
Considering that Campion students were among the least experienced debaters at the event, their confidence and ability to compete at such a high level was particularly impressive. Special recognition goes to Ruya, Caitlin and Manny for their exceptional speeches and insightful contributions during questioning.
We are incredibly proud of all the students involved, and we look forward to entering teams to participate in similar events in the future.
